2018 July/Live Period Information

As a program, we have had numerous teams qualify for AAU Nationals at Disneyworld in Florida over the past two years. Three of those teams accepted bids and traveled during July to compete and represent Rhode Island and the Magic. In addition, last summer, we had another team play in an extremely competitive tournament in Philadelphia. Over the past two years, several of our top teams have opted to continue playing through July and for the Spring/Summer of 2018, we anticipate eight teams will extend their season, including all of our blue teams from 8th-11th grade. As a program, we want to provide with you as much information as possible, as early as possible, so you are aware of the time, travel and financial commitments that are required. Finally, we will have a meeting in the middle of April, when more information is available and we can provide a specific schedule for your team.

Practice Schedule

Teams would practice once a week at a date, time and location to be determined. This practice would be a team practice with their coach and will last 75-90 minutes.

Costs include practice time, insurance, tournament fees and some travel expenses for the coaches. The final cost is determined by how many players agree to participate on each team and the number of tournaments each team participates in as well. Keep in mind tournaments during the live periods are extremely expensive, as most of these tournaments are exposure events and NCAA certified. The final price will not be determined until the roster and schedule are finalized, which usually occurs in the middle of April. This fee does not include travel and hotel accommodations for players and families.

Travel and Hotel Information

Some tournaments are fairly close and are within driving distance, while others will require a hotel. The Rhode Island Magic has a travel coordinator who will assist with the booking of hotels for teams, trying to secure the best rate possible. You are not obligated to stay at that hotel; however, it is recommend that for Nationals, the entire team stays together. For AAU Nationals, we book our stay at a resort within 10 minutes of Disney. For that tournament, you will need to arrive no later than the early afternoon of the day before the first game and plan to stay through the late afternoon/early evening of the last day.
